Former World Champion Returns to Mooloolaba
Etchells sailor Peter McNeill wants to again showcase his winning skills on the familiar waters off Mooloolaba in the June long-weekend 2007 Etchells Australian Winter Championship
McNeill and his crew of Paul Turner and Greg Torpy took out the Etchells World Championship trophy when it was conducted off Mooloolaba in 2004.
He knows that Etchells regattas regularly attract the ‘whose-who’ in one-design class sailing in Australia.
"We can’t wait to get to Mooloolaba and sail in what is probably the most competitive regatta on the Australian yachting calendar this year," McNeill says.
This year McNeill, from Lake Macquarie, will be competing with a new crew of Peter McLachlan from Perth and fellow Lake sailor Dean Wyborn. The team are coming to the Winter Championship as the current NSW state champions.
"We take some confidence from being the last regatta (NSW states) winners going into the Winters and hope to perform well," McNeill says.
McNeill recognises that even with that recent win to his name and a new boat, he will up against some very tough competition.
"…I expect the best performers this year will be John Bertrand, Mark Bulka, Cameron Miles… to name just a few," McNeill says.
