FOR IMMEDITATE RELEASE

Laser Sailors Race for Chocolate Bilbies

Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, Brisbane – Wednesday March 21, 2007:

With Easter fast approaching sailors from all walks of life are in the final stages of planning which regatta they will attend during the short break.

In 2006 Laser enthusiast and current Australian Laser Association President Ken Hurling was searching for a Laser regatta to contest in during the Easter holiday break and to look for a training opportunity before the Queensland State Championships and 2006 Masters Worlds in Korea.  With nothing happening in his immediate area of South East Queensland, he urgently arranged a simple regatta for Laser sailors and such named it the Laser Easter Bilby Regatta.

The Bilby is the new Australian icon representing Easter having decided to move away from the typical Easter Bunny some years ago.

The four-day event commencing on Good Friday will see 40 plus Lasers visit the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron where Hurling is an active member and volunteer.

“The idea was to move away from the serious regatta format and just have some fun over the Easter break.  We are also using the opportunity to race against each other as training for the forthcoming Laser Masters World Championships to be held in Roses, Spain in October/September this year.  Instead of racing for the trophies we are all vying for chocolate and a perpetual handcrafted stainless steel bilby!” said Hurling.

The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron has a very strong and competitive Laser fleet with two current world champions Greg Adams and former Olympian Christine Bridge racing there each week.  Past world champions Christine Bridge and Kerry Waraker also race competitively at RQYS as does Brendan Casey who now sails a Finn and who is campaigning for the Beijing Olympic Games.

The Laser Easter Bilby Regatta is open to the 4.7, Radial and Full Rig fleets.  Youths, Opens and Masers are all welcome to enter.

For details regarding the Laser Easter Bilby Regatta or to enter this unique event, please contact Ken Hurling on 0417 644 086.
