Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron
Opening Day of the 122nd Sailing Season
This Saturday the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron celebrates in grand style the Opening of its 122nd Sailing Season. The Squadron was founded in 1885 for those gentlemen whose interest was in water sports and has held yearly competition on the water ever since.
The day commences with the Blessing of the Fleet and Opening of the Sailing Season by Guest of Honour Commander Robert Plath ADC RAN.
This year the Ceremony will take on a special flavour with the presentation of Life Membership to one of the Squadron's long standing members, Ron Bailey, as well as the very special occasion of the release of the Squadron's history Up the River & Down the Bay.
Following the Ceremony, Manly Harbour will come alive with a flotilla of yachts, powerboats and dinghies as the traditional Sailpast and Salute is taken by Commander Plath.
In the afternoon the first sailing race of the season will be conducted for both off-the-beach dinghies, keelboats and multihulls in what, will be an exciting season of summer racing including the holding of five National Regattas on Moreton Bay in December and January.
Commodore Kevin Miller stated, "The Opening Day celebrations and Opening Day Regatta, to be highlighted this year, by the release of the Squadron's remarkable 121 years of history, will no doubt be an exciting and enjoyable day for all members and their guests".
