It has been a great day today. At approximately 3.00 am this morning Mat and I were confirmed as the new world number ones in the Men’s 470 Olympic Sailing Class.
The latest ISAF World Sailing rankings (the official rankings for the Olympic Classes) have confirmed our recent dramatic rise in performance with an improved ranking from 4th in December 2006 to current world number one.
This is obviously our best world ranking since we started sailing together in late 2003 and is a great result for us. The ISAF world sailing rankings take into account performances over a 2 year period, counting the best 7 regattas within the two year time frame.
It is also a very good ranking release for Australia as we now have two boats out of eleven classes ranked as number one, following no crews in the number one position throughout the entirety of 2006. Australia is now ranked second country only just behind Great Britain on the basis of the number of teams ranked in the top three in the world.
We have gained the top spot after two years of finishing consistently around or amongst the medals in some of our class’s toughest competitions. Podium positions at both events in Miami (3rd at North American Championships and 2nd at the 2007 Rolex Miami OCR) have moved us to the coveted top spot.
From our point of view it is extremely satisfying as it reflects the hard work that we have constantly put in over the past two years. The ranking recognises our strong team values, our excellent coaching (Victor Kovalenko) and is an indication of our desire to be the best in the world come August 2008 when the Olympic Games will be held.
With this also comes a strong warning to us. If we become even a little bit complacent all our hard work will be undone in an instant. However if we use this as strong motivation to continue doing everything possible to stay world number one over the next 18 months then it can be a real positive to our campaign.
In summary it has been a great day doing media commitments and also receiving an individually addressed letter from the President of the International Sailing Federation, Goran Petersson.
There is much to be done but every once in a while you have to smile and enjoy the journey. Today is one of those days.
Take care,
